FILMING AND EDITING

Below is a time-lapse of the stage makeup look Eloise and I created on Ruby for our film opening, we researched and trialled different ideas and products so we could create a realistic bruised and beaten face. We used specific colours and tones in certain places to create realistic bruises and swelling, we also used fake blood to create scratches and wounds to appear as if she has been abused. This worked well and we were happy with the outcome. It took us a total of 3 days to film our opening sequence, on each day we were careful to replicate the makeup look perfectly to avoid having any continuity errors.

Eloise and I both found we had different strengths when creating Ruby's makeup look, so we worked together to do it quickly and efficiently on each day of filming.

Here is a picture of Ruby's final look with her costume on. We chose to use a baggy night dress and make it look even more worn by crunching it up snd making it dirty to give the impression not had been worn for a long time in horrible conditions.

We also made Ruby's hair messy and unclean so that it looks realistic to the audience. In this picture you can also see where we have used fake blood and created bruises around the areas she has been beaten to validate the storyline.

Here you can see a picture of me creating a bruise on and Ruby's face and all of the products we used for this process.

SHOOTING SCRIPT

We created a shooting script to keep us on track and keep us focused on what we need to achieve during our days of filming. We keep organised by having a folder which we will take with us whenever we are shooting.

DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED WHEN EDITING-

Footage- One of the issues we encountered when we came to edit our final opening title sequence was that when we were filming Ruby breaking down the fence with the axe there was a lot of background noise however we needed the clear "BANG" sounds of the axe hitting the fence to match the actions on screen. The way we resolved this was by taking the clear bang sounds from other videos of Ruby hitting the fence, detaching them and using the sound over the footage in our title sequence I feel that this worked well and looked convincing.

Continuity- Another issue we had to overcome in our editing process was that our filming wasn't always continuous and when Ruby was breaking down the fence, and in between different clips we filmed the loose pieces of wood had fallen off, to overcome this issue we made the decision to edit our storyboard and initial idea and re-film extra shots. We used a male actor to film flashback style shots of Ruby and her abductor. We then edited these in-between the fence shots to disguise all continuity errors. We also added a vignette filter and altered the colours to hint to the audience that these were flashbacks.

Sound- We had to alter the sound a lot as we were editing new footage into our sequence and needed the sound effects to match what was happening on screen, this was difficult however once we had started editing sound with garage band and layering different sound clips together we resolved this issue.

Lighting- Many shots came out blurry due to the darkness inside the barn, we edited these changing the lighting, colour and speed which managed to fix man of the clips we thought we couldn't use.
